Ingredients Needed
Pumpkin Spice Morsels – we used Nestle Tollhouse Pumpkin Spice Chips. These are a Fall seasonal item found in most grocery stores.
Shortening – it’s fine to replace with butter.
Chex Cereal – I like to use Rice Chex, but feel free to use Corn Chex (or a mix of both).
Powdered Sugar – used for coating.
How To Make Pumpkin Spice Muddy Buddies
Place the pumpkin spice morsels in a bowl and microwave for 35 seconds and stir. Reheat it as needed. If it seems stiff, add some shortening to loosen it up.
Stir the cereal in and coat it completely. Next, you will add the powdered sugar to a large ziptop bag and add the candy-coated cereal.
Close the bag and shake well. Empty the cereal on the cookie sheet and let it dry for an hour before you package in another storage container. This will keep the cereal treat crunchy, and the flavors will have time to combine.
How To Store Pumpkin Spice Muddy Buddies
Because the ingredients of a muddy buddy, also called puppy chow, is made from shelf stable ingredients, it does not need to be refrigerated. Make sure to keep the puppy chow covered well in an airtight container or in a freezer bag. As long as the puppy chow is stored properly, it will typically be good for one week.
As cereal tends to get soggy easily, don’t cover the container of this recipe until it is set and cooled. Condensation in a container can cause your puppy chow recipe to go soft, and that just isn’t any fun.
